Amazon Sword (Echinodorus grisebachii)
The Amazon sword is the specimen plant — the big, broad-leaved rosette you put in the back of the tank as a centrepiece. It is a rooted macrophyte in the Alismataceae (the same family as the model's dwarf sagittaria), native to the tropical waters of Central and South America, and Echinodorus grisebachii is the umbrella species that absorbs the old aquarium names E. bleheri and E. amazonicus. Where dwarf sag is the grass in the front of the tank, its big cousin the sword is the plant in the back that reaches for the surface and shades everything beneath it. It is one of the most enduringly popular aquarium plants — hardy, adaptable, undemanding of water chemistry — with one firm requirement: it is a very heavy root feeder, and it wants a rich substrate.
A large, moderate specimen
The Amazon sword grows at a moderate pace — quicker than the slow, shade-loving Cryptocoryne, but below the moderate carpeter dwarf sag and the fast, light-hungry Vallisneria. Its reputation as a big plant comes not from a fast growth rate but from a large individual: a mature sword simply carries far more biomass than a Crypt or Vallisneria rosette, and sustained moderate growth on that large frame is what fills the back corner of a tank over a couple of months. As with the other rooted plants, a freshly planted crown sits still at first — often shedding a leaf or two as it converts to submerged growth — then accelerates once its roots reach the sediment nutrients.
Unlike the runner-spreading Sagittaria and Vallisneria, the sword does not knit a turf: it grows as a single expanding rosette, so its biomass accumulates as one large crown rather than a spreading carpet.
A tall canopy
The sword's defining physical trait is that it is big and tall. Its broad, lance-shaped leaves rise on petioles toward the water surface, so — like a Vallisneria bed and unlike the short dwarf-sag or Cryptocoryne rosettes — a large sword casts a real canopy that shades the water column and the bed beneath it. In the model it carries both a canopy-shading coefficient (a broad-leaf umbrella that shades slightly more per unit biomass than Vallisneria's narrow straps) and Beer-Lambert depth shading of the substrate. Nothing much grows in the shadow of a big sword — a fact every aquascaper who has tried to keep a carpet alive under one knows well.
The archetypal root feeder
If there is one thing the Amazon sword is famous for, it is root tabs. It is the heaviest root feeder in the model's rooted roster: roughly three-quarters of its nutrient-gathering capacity comes from pore water through high-affinity root transporters, and it makes the largest below-ground carbon investment of any plant here, building a thick, extensive white root system. This is why it responds so dramatically to a nutrient-rich substrate and sulks in an inert one — it is a plant that feeds from the mud first and the water column second. Its big leaf canopy still lets it take up meaningful nitrogen from the water column, so it is not quite as sediment-exclusive as the slow, small-leaved Crypt, but the sediment is unmistakably its main larder.
That heavy root dependence has a consequence: because root uptake capacity scales with how developed the root system is, and the sword invests so heavily below ground, its establishment lag is the most pronounced of the rooted plants. A newly planted sword is slow to start in a fresh tank, then vigorous once rooted — exactly the "does nothing for a month, then takes off" behaviour aquarists report.
Carbon and water chemistry
The sword is a competent bicarbonate user with a working carbon-concentrating mechanism, so it copes with moderately hard, alkaline water. Its CCM is weaker than Vallisneria's, but it pairs that with a high affinity for dissolved carbon dioxide, which makes it both low-tech viable and a clear responder to injected CO₂ — the plant is grown happily in dirted low-tech tanks and in high-tech injected show tanks alike. It tolerates a wide pH band, from soft acidic to moderately hard water.
Tropical, and strictly freshwater
Two envelope traits set the sword apart from its temperate cousins. First, it is genuinely tropical: its warm native range makes it markedly less cold-tolerant than the temperate dwarf sag or the subtropical Vallisneria, with a lethal cold floor well above theirs. Second, it is strictly freshwater — it has none of dwarf sag's estuarine salt tolerance and inherits the standard freshwater envelope, like Vallisneria and Cryptocoryne.
